42nd Annual Stanford Pow Wow
Following a few weekend assignments for the Town Crier, I made my way to Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA for the 42nd Annual Stanford Pow Wow. The event provided an illuminating glimpse at native cultures from North America and South America (including Native Americans and Aztec Indians) and provided food for the spirit. A pow wow is derived from a word meaning spiritual leader and involves...

20 years and still going strong →
The Los Altos Town Crier in Los Altos, CA has been operating nonstop for 65 years and owned by the same local couple for the past 20 years.   For some insight into why this small community paper continues to be relevant and beloved by so many subscribers, please take a glimpse at the editorial that our publisher Paul Nyberg wrote in this week’s paper. I’m proud  to belong to such a...

Just another day...
Gas leak temporarily closes San Antonio Road - Images by Los Altos Town Crier It’s Wednesday afternoon.  I’ve churned out an article about a recent report on an investigation of flooding in Los Altos in Dec. and turned it in to the copy editors.   As 1 p.m. nears, a call to the office sends a reporter and I out the door to examine a natural gas leak on a major route through town...

Weekend Favorites: Pro-Choice and Pro-Life meet...
It would not be an understatement to say that the streets of San Francisco were flooded with activists crusading for two divergent perspectives on the issue of abortion and women’s rights last weekend. As pro-choice advocates rallied at Justin Herman Plaza, pro-life advocates gathered in front of city hall before marching down Market Street. At the half-way point of the 2.5 mile walk to...

Multimedia hits the Town Crier newsroom
As part of an online supplement to last week’s Los Altos Town Crier print paper reporting, I worked with a colleague on the editorial team to create this multimedia piece about a large construction project in Mountain View, CA. With limited time, video equipment and editing software, we were able to pull together this snappy little video. The piece received over 300 plays in a matter of...

Planting trees to remember Sandy Hook shooting...
The sun shone radiantly Saturday (Jan. 12) as members of the Los Altos Youth Empowerment Group gathered at Redwood Grove Nature Preserve in Los Altos, CA to plant trees in memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newton, CT. In commemoration of the tragedy, the group planted three Redwood trees and decorated them with 28 paper cranes in memory of the victims. The...

Santa Cruz Boardwalk
Before the crowds arrive, before the sun rises, the Santa Cruz boardwalk is strikingly silent, and I enjoyed the opportunity to capture the space devoid of visitors.  Can’t wait to return to the boardwalk for evening photos.

Young competitors at the schooling show
It was a pleasure to swing by the Purissima Park Riding Arena Sunday morning for the Los Altos Hills Horsemen’s Association Summer Schooling Show.  It was quite amusing to watch perky young riders and their equine friends as they participated in impromptu Hunter Jumper exercises around the ring to simulate the competitions they soon hope to participate in.  There were some intense emotion as...

First Friday in Los Altos
I stopped by Los Altos’ First Friday after work last week and caught a few images to capture the sights and sounds of the community.  With musicians on the street, restaurants teeming with guests on outdoor patios and plenty of people and pets on the street, the evening represented the vibrancy of the town.

Peninsula Symphony Summer Pops Concert
One of the greatest challenges of a photo editor is picking an image for the cover of the print paper.  The “it” image needs to tell the whole story in one shot while also drawing readers into the paper.  Sometimes the most artistic photos don’t make the print cut, but are too beautiful to leave in the archives. With the above in mind, sharing the Los Altos Town Crier’s...

Strawberries & More: Jacobs Farm in Pescadero, CA
It was a beautiful day for a drive through the mountains of the Bay Area to Jacobs Farm near the quaint town of Pescadero, CA.  Nestled just a mile or two from the ocean and the famous California Route 1, the picturesque backdrop of Jacobs Farm fits right into the rolling hills, cliffs and fields of peas and artichokes that define San Mateo County. Although my visit was quick, I had the chance to...
